computers for audio 2007/03/30 07:45
I understand that this sort of question faces personal preferences beyond anything else, but next semester I'm planning on buying a nice computer for my audio stuff. I'm also an avid gamer and was wondering if there was any way to bridge the gap between gaming standards and audio standards into one computer. Audio stuff would be stored on a separate hard drive, definitely, but I'm trying to figure out how to go about customizing a computer for this job.

I like velocity micro and that's who I got my laptop from a couple years ago and it's always been a nice machine.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Hi,
in my opinion, you should never install games and audio software on the same computer. the problem is not the separate harddrive, it's that you still use the same operating system and that could mess up your system.

I think, in general, programmes like games, office or Internet shouldn't be installed on a audio computer.

I know that's probabely not what you wanted to hear but I hope you understand what I'm talking about.

I've never personally had issues due to installing games and such onto my audio machines, however you do have to be weary of anything that installs background services that run constantly whether you are using the software or not.

I'm not a Windows expert though... tend to spend most of my time on Macs...

Hi
I've always had several problems with computer's till I bought my Mac. I got so enthusiastic that sometimes it seems like I'm paid from Apple to help them selling their computers.
I value a stable operating system, and since there's not a lot of standard audio software for Linux, Mac Os seems to be the best in this terms. Besides now you can install windows on Macs which allows you to play games as well.
If you don't mind spending time configuring your software, than buy a regular PC, for less money!

Since I'll have some scholarship money to play with, I'm thinking that if I get a Mac with two completely separate hard drives, I could have it boot up to either the Mac OS or to Vista. One could contain all my gaming stuff, and the other could contain my audio stuff- both completely exclusive. I love the reliability of the Mac, but after 14 hours of editing or so, a day of Morrowind or Counter-Strike would be a welcome relief.

Thanks for the input, I appreciate it greatly.

You don't need separate drives, just separate drive partitions. You can also run OSX on a PC using VMware.
