I have been asked to record and do a basic mix of some musician's material. How much is standard for freelance recordings like this. I'm using Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 with the music toolkit. I'm running this through my Macbook Pro. I have two AKG condenser mics, one Marshall condenser mic and one dynamic marshall mic. I've been wanting to do this for a while because I need money and projects. But I have no idea how much to charge.
I went to Full Sail and got my Associates in Recording Arts. IF there is any advice anyone can give me I would greatly appreciate it. I also live in the Jeffersonville, IN/Louisville, KY area if that makes any difference.

Hi Gabriel, sorry it took me a while to answer your question, but the best advice I would have for you would be to go to a pro audio dealer's store, see how much he rents his equipment for (the exact same as yours and for how long). This gives you the rental point of view.
Then you adjust your price within that. For the time recording and mixing, well that's up to you. Good friends in need of help with no penny or strangers off of the streets that could bring you their friends also? What kind of recording it is, how much time you'll be recording and mixing. All to take into consideration. I think that if you have done your classes at Full Sail, you should be able to put a price on that. You aren't just someone with a PT system that learned in your friend's basement! (I have seen a lot of those).
Good luck with your project or future projects.

First, Do you have studio space or will you be recording on the fly? Secondly, about the basic mix, will you be recording a musician or musicians? Generally, I like to find out how many instruments and/or musicians need to be recorded and/or any special set-up/equipment requirements that need to be planned for.
Additionally, one should factor in the degree of engineering needed. Are you going to track, mix and master the piece from start to finish? Are you cutting a rough demo or only engineering one phase of the piece? Once you have answered these questions, you can get a clearer idea of the time and effort you will need to invest.
As far as exact numbers go, it is difficult to pin a price on artistry. Ultimately, if you are a relative newcomer, as I am, you would be wise to be modest and/or flexible on your pricing. Personally, I think it is better to work on a few projects and build your reputation than to make top dollar and have a lagging repertoire and client base.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the best and hope this information may give you some insight, if not a simple answer.
Keep making music,
